– Mis à jour le 2 septembre 2025
Le 24 octobre prochain, Aude Busine, Professeure d'histoire de l'antiquité à l'ULB, présentera une intervention intitulée : "Pagan and Christian Holy Women as Oracles in Late Antiquity", dans le cadre du colloque "Divination and Authority in Graeco-Roman Antiquity" organisé par Kim Beerden (Leiden), Jens Fischer (Potsdam) et Rafał Matuszewski (Leiden), à l'Université de Potsdam, du 22 au 24 octobre 2025.
Pagan and Christian Holy Women as Oracles in Late Antiquity
"This paper will examine the divinatory functions of pagan and Christian holy women in Late Antiquity. While some modern scholars have suggested that the attribution of a new oracular authority to certain Neoplatonic philosophers sought to compensate for the decline of traditional oracular sanctuaries, this issue has not been addressed in relation to Christian saints who possessed divinatory powers. The question of the de-institutionalization of oracles in both pagan and Christian contexts in the 4th and 5th centuries will be explored. I will also raise the issue of the competition between these new intermediaries between the divine and human realms."Programme
